Sara Devoe is a Brooklyn-based indie artist who began releasing music during the pandemic, sharing her debut EP harsh in November 2021. Her 2024 EP scared of the dark continues that amalgamated dream pop and grunge rock approach, complete with dark shuddering synths and sharp, radiant flourishes. The result is a soft, yet smoky atmosphere, a mix of light and shadows.
Tracks like “why am i like this” and “cindy” are soft and hazy, with a robust cinematic aura; “sleep with me” and “my old room,” exhilaratingly upbeat, encapsulate a bright, vivid intensity that seems to glow from the inside out. But ultimately the EP shines in moments, like in “the worst person in the world,” where the tracks reveal, either subtly or explicitly, their inner vulnerability and honesty.
