Two years after the release of their stunning EP Familiar Spirits, as well as a handful of memorable singles, TEEN BLUSH has returned with 2019, a stunning collection of demos, b-sides, and rarities. Since its conception, the Chicago-based lo-fi dream-pop project has consistently sought to capture the inexplicable of nostalgia and the angst that can materialize alongside the unpredictability of youth, thoughtfully combining vast, atmospheric swaths of shadowy, industrial-tinged, 80’s inspired synth with moody, echoed vocals.
Upbeat, yet soothing tracks like “You Wonder,” “Chasing Days,” and “Tennis Court” provide light and levity, while tracks like “1981” and “Ramona” cultivate a darker, yet balanced atmosphere of immediacy. In between, moments of rumination, such as “Falling” and “Fog Over the Lake” emerge like sonic adhesive to hold it all together. Although 2019 pulls from many rivers, it all flows into the same remarkable body of work TEEN BLUSH has been gorgeously cultivating over the past few years, proving the dazzling range of their sound.
