French surf-pop trio Layday have returned with their dreamy new EP Well Wasted Time. Recorded near the ocean and drawing inspiration from 60’s romanticism, Layday’s sound is bright, airy, and the slightest bit pensive; bouncy, playful guitars (“empty glass”), splashy percussion (“favorite girl”) and echoed, sun-weathered vocals (“shortcuts”) merge to create a beautifully textured, retro-inspired atmosphere that brings to mind the nostalgia of summer afternoons. And yet, despite the vibrance of these tracks, there is also a wonderfully raw tinge to the lo-fi instrumentals, highlighting the lived-in, intimate quality of its production.
Overall, Well Wasted Time is a love letter to those warm, carefree days where it seems anything and everything is possible, even more so when you have someone to share them with.
