SG75: bathrobe - scary movies [EP]

Portland-based artist Bathrobe amalgamates dream pop and shoegaze into one shimmering package. Their 2022 album Blue Drift oscillated between nostalgia and illusion, with tracks that sounded almost as iridescent blue as the album’s cover. True to its name, Bathrobe’s most recent EP scary movies is subtly cinematic and composed with a focus on intimacy.

Opener “a.m.” is the perfect entry point into this dark, evocative world, easing into the album’s ruminative aura that seems to be equal parts sun and shadow. There is a meticulous intensity within these tracks, emphasized by synth and echoed vocals. Each track seems to take on a different shade of introspection; “every saturday” is pensive and patient, while “cliffside” is brooding and contemplative. However, by closing the EP with the dazzling, upbeat “goth eyes,” Bathrobe reveals a light that was always nestled within, a small morsel of hope embedded in the margins.
