SG74: TEEN BLUSH - Familiar Spirits [EP]
Since their debut single back in 2019, what has remained static within Chicago-based dream pop project TEEN BLUSH’s sound is their flawless evocation of the wistful and the cinematic. The project’s name, an amalgamation of the attempt to “capture a unique feeling of nostalgia” and “a soft notion of teen angst,” perfectly fits its aura; vast, atmospheric swaths of industrial-tinged, 80’s inspired synth mingles with dark, echoed, moody vocals, floating perfectly in sync. And their most recent EP Familiar Spirits is no exception.
“Alone” and “To the Bone” are quiet, yet ultra-charged with emotion; opener “For The Night” is coarse, upbeat, and slightly gothic in its narrative and composition; the waltz-like nature of “Silhouette” floats gracefully, despite the heavy weight of its own fantasy. Familiar Spirits frequently engages with the idea of reality versus reverie - and it’s never really clear, in the best sense, which one to root for.
