SG69: Cathedral Bells - Another Lifetime [EP]

Cathedral Bells is the shoegaze bedroom pop project of Orlando, Florida-based musician Matt Messore. Since his first album Velvet Spirit, his music has always expressed a gorgeous sense of immanence; Messore’s synth work, direct and atmospheric, simultaneously immobilizes and expands emotion in a way that feels revelatory, always seemingly just a step away from pure catharsis. And his most recent EP Another Lifetime is no exception; composed of lush, slightly melancholic melodies and impassioned vocals, the release feels like a generous slice of what makes Cathedral Bells Cathedral Bells.

“Bent” and “Spiral” are sharp and darkened, but not without enough light in the corners to keep it slightly on the edge of hope; “Good For You,” featuring CASTLEBEAT, is hypnotic and gorgeously cinematic, the instrumentals pulsing forward like a determined, restless heartbeat. Despite the swaths of shadow that envelop each track, there are these little flickers of yearning, a longing look towards something bigger and brighter, an arm outstretched towards a pale light - but it is a light, all the same.
