SG68: Found Space - Closer [EP]

Found Space is the alternative dream pop project of Spen Oliver and Lillian Christopher. After releasing five independent singles, including the hazy, heartfelt “Don’t Let It Go,” produced by Jackson Phillips of Day Wave, they’ve followed-up with Closer, their stunning debut EP. Written “over the course of a couple months between late nights going out and long days at community college/food service jobs,” the album is an “inside look into the life of a 20-something,” with narratives that “speak to finding yourself amongst old connections while yearning for the new.”

And right from opener “Turning Over a New Leaf,” this idea is abundantly clear; swells of synth and heavy, almost-brooding percussion emulate the struggle between past and present, a moment of rumination reimagined as song. Softer moments like the opener and closer “Everything” are balanced by the more jagged, rougher tracks like “Tell Me (do you know?) as well as the evocative, near-purgative title track, drawing more attention to that interplay between nostalgia and action, right at the cusp of letting go and allowing something better to take its place.
